Director’s Statement

Growing up in Flanders, Belgium, I was surrounded by a culture where people take pride in a strong work ethic. I often saw the negative consequences of this manic fixation on work in which personal relationships would be neglected, resulting into lack of communication. The irony of doing intensive, physical work to avoid doing emotional work is something I also find myself struggling with, leading me to view the struggle of communication as a Flemish cultural issue. By focusing on two non-communicative characters in my film, I wish to explore the absurdity of how complicated it can feel to do something as simple as talking to a loved one.
